Mr. Smyth graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and physics.
Upon graduation, he started his career with Nortel Networks Ltd.
where he held successive senior technical and management positions in research and development.
Mr. Smyth participated in the development of the world’s first family of fully digital telecommunications switching systems.
In 1990, Mr. Smyth became the president of Bell-Northern Research (BNR), Nortel’s research and development subsidiary at the time.
As the chief architect behind the globalization of Nortel’s R&D efforts, he led the research and the development of products to meet the needs of global markets, launched Nortel and partnership labs in Australia, China, India, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.
He served as the head of Nortel’s joint venture with Daimler Benz in Germany, and Board member of Nortel’s JV Lab in China.
From 1994 until 1997 he was stationed in Europe as the Nortel executive responsible for their International R&D and worked and traveled extensively throughout Asia.
In 1997, he moved to the US as the executive responsible for the development of the AT&T account for Nortel.
Mr. Smyth retired from Nortel in June of 2000.
He is currently with Purple Angel.
Mr. Smyth is an Honorary Professor of the Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication, and holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Ottawa.
He has served on the Board of Carleton University, and the advisory board of the National Research Council.
