He is currently serving as a Judge-US Circuit in the United States Court of Appeals for DC Circuit.
Previously, he served as Chairman of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Spencer Foundation.
He also served as Director of the Office for Civil Rights in both the US Department of Education and the US Department of Health & Human Services.
Additionally, he was the Director of The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the Founding Director of The Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Inc. Mr. Tatel holds a graduate degree from The University of Chicago and an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.

The non-profit company is based in CHICAGO, IL. It addresses discrimination in voting rights, education, housing, employment, economic opportunity, and hate crimes through specialized projects such as the Economic Justice Project, Educational Opportunities Project, Fair Housing & Community Development Project, and the James Byrd Jr. Center to Stop Hate. The organization focuses on impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community education to dismantle systemic barriers faced by Black communities and other marginalized groups. Its initiatives include defending affirmative action and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs; challenging racially discriminatory redistricting and voting restrictions; protecting voting rights through the nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition; combating housing discrimination and segregation; and addressing hate crimes and election-related intimidation. The organization files amicus briefs nationwide, supports legal challenges to discriminatory policies, and engages in public education to empower affected communities. It also fosters sustained civil rights advocacy through its Civil Rights Solidarity Fund, which supports legal actions, coalition-building, and rapid responses to emerging threats.
