KPIM's analyst/portfolio managers use a rational, business-like approach to selecting and evaluating companies for inclusion in a portfolio. Their research is on companies expected to earn a high return on capital, that can generate good long-term growth, are run by shareholder-minded managements and sell at attractive prices. For most clients, they view fixed-income investments as a source of income and relative price stability compared to stocks. Depending on the risk tolerances, liquidity needs and tax situation of the client, they select from such issues as U.S. government bonds, investment-grade corporates and municipal obligations. They often structure bond investments so that a roughly equivalent dollar amount matures each year. KPIM seeks to control credit risk through proprietary credit analysis and interest rate risk through constraints on the duration of bonds selected for investment. As with their equity management service, they construct fixed-income and balanced portfolios with the client's goals and risk preferences in mind.

SMITH HAYES Advisers' security analysis methods may include fundamental analysis, technical analysis or a combination of the two. The firm may use no-load open and closed-end mutual funds, including ETFs, which grant access to markets where they either cannot provide adequate expertise or where the client could not acquire sufficient corporate bonds, REITs, or other specific investment products.
