Open Lunar Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on enabling a peaceful, cooperative, and sustainable human presence on the moon that benefits all life. The private company is located in the US. Since 2018, the foundation has brought together a community of experts to develop open lunar infrastructure through governance, innovation, and technology. Its work includes creating standards, policies, legal frameworks, digital tools, hardware, and essential infrastructure to support responsible lunar stewardship and equitable access to the lunar economy. One of its initiatives is the Lunar Ledger, an open-access database for registering lunar missions and tracking activities to reduce risks and avoid site conflicts. Open Lunar conducts research on lunar challenges such as time coordination, resource management, safety, navigation services, and governance simulations, sharing findings publicly. The foundation follows a structured innovation process and selects projects based on criteria emphasizing stewardship, governance, cooperation, and open access. It participates as a permanent observer at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and collaborates with international partners to promote sustainable lunar exploration.
