Mr. Holderness began his career in Raleigh in 1974 with the finance department of Durham Life Insurance Co. He held the positions of Assistant Vice President, Member of the Finance Committee, and Vice President in charge of the Securities Department.
He was directly responsible for managing a stock and bond portfolio in excess of $300,000,000.
In 1982, he returned to Greensboro, and along with two partners, formed North Carolina Trust Company in order to manage investments for individuals and corporations as well as provide general trust and financial consulting services.
At NC Trust, he served as President and Chief Investment Officer.
In 1987, he co-founded the Registered Investment Advisory firm Trent Capital Management, Inc. also in Greensboro, NC.
At Trent, he served as President and a member of the Board of Directors from the organization’s inception until August 1995 when he left to fulfill his desire to start his own firm, Holderness Investments Company.
For several years, he has served as a member of the UNC Chapel Hill Medical Foundation, and the UNC Greensboro Investment Fund committees.
He has also served on the UNC Greensboro Board of Visitors.
He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also earned his MBA in Finance.
He has been awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst and Fellow Life Management Institute designations.
