These companies typically have unique products or brands with high barriers to entry, expanding market share or margins, proven management and a history of stable earnings growth. In their long/short strategies, they short companies that consistently destroy capital. The firm seeks to short companies that they believe mainstream investors have mispriced. These companies typically have brands with diminishing value or quasi-monopolies that are no longer defensible. They often have declining margins and declining market share. Many of these companies also have management that lacks focus or whose interest is not in line with minority investors.
