Wallop started as a research project in the Microsoft labs where a team built a prototype for a next generation social network. Karl Jacob, a serial entrepreneur, developed a business model for the network and worked with Microsoft to spinout the company. Over the next year, the Wallop team continued building the prototype and researching social networking. While the Wallop team was working on launching their website, other social networks expanded to platforms and opened their APIs. As a result Wallop retooled their product and focused on developing cutting-edge applications for leading social networking platforms like Facebook, and Bebo.

Microsoft Research conducts research in computer science and software engineering fields. It offers research services for both basic and applied research in computer science fields. Microsoft Research was founded by Richard Rashid in 1991 and is headquartered in Redmond, WA.
