Daimler Northeast Asia (DNEA) concluded 2011 by writing another successful page in Daimler's history of 125 years as inventor of the automobile, with record sales across the board in all business segments and regions.
DNEA's combined sales of Mercedes-Benz Cars across its four regions (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea) grew 33% year-on-year to reach a total of 233,840 units.
"All of Daimler Northeast Asia business regions performed remarkably well in 2011, as we posted new records across cars, trucks and vans," said Mr. Ulrich Walker, Chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia.
"Daimler is the only premium manufacturer in the region that covers all automotive segments, and our continued strong sales confirm that we are building momentum not just with luxury passenger cars but also premium commercial vehicles and financial services."
Mercedes-Benz Cars in Mainland China completed 2011 with a double record of best month and best year ever: In December, 23,230 units (+30%) brought the record year to a successful close with total sales of 198,520 vehicles for 2011, a 35% increase over last year.
Fujian Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. (FJDA), Daimler's joint venture for Mercedes-Benz vans, made an impressive contribution as sales of the Vito, Viano, and Sprinter vans reached 12,900 units in 2011, a 43% growth over 2010. With local production of the premium Sprinter van adding to FJDA's production capacity in 2011, FJDA will be able to fully respond to demand in China in the growing van segment in 2012.
Imported Mercedes-Benz trucks totaled 5,780 in 2011, nearly doubling sales with a 91% growth compared to 2010. Mercedes-Benz trucks are contributing to upgrades of construction and industry infrastructure in China. In turn the new infrastructure enables the use of a new generation of heavy trucks, with Mercedes-Benz fuel-efficient and high-quality trucks representing great value over the lifetime of the vehicle.
In Hong Kong, 5,870 units of Mercedes-Benz autos were delivered to customers as sales grew by 26%. The E-Class and the C-Class were the most popular models, with sales of more than 1,500 units of the E-Class, and 14% sales growth for the C-Class. Combined sales of the E-Coupe and E-Cabriolet grew by 94%, and the R-Class also proved popular with 40% growth.
Taiwan's growth was impressive with an increase of 32% in 2011. This strong growth trend was due in large part to the success of the flagship S-Class and pillar E-Class and C-Class sedans, which have all been very well received. Further growth was also driven by the E-Class and C-Class Coupés, as well as the CLS and SLK-Class sports models, and new R-Class. Both smart (+22%) and Mercedes-Benz Trucks (+60%) also posted substantial sales growth compared to 2010.
South Korea experienced solid growth, posting total sales for the year of 19,600 units. The growth in the country of 19% compared to 2010 was driven by exceptional sales performance of the E-Class and C-Class sedans.
Throughout 2011, Daimler continued to support its Chinese customers on the road to upward mobility through its financing group, Mercedes-Benz Auto Finance Ltd. (MBAFC). Over 15% of Mercedes-Benz customers took advantage of financing packages offered by MBAFC as the company's portfolio grew to 1.8 billion Euros in 2011. MBAFC follows the growth of the dealership network, with current coverage in close to 90 cities in China.
